Wessex Autistic Society Hydrotherapy Pool
Client: Wessex Autistic Society
Location: Portfield School, Dorset
Portfield School, the first school in the UK purpose-built for autistic children, saw hydrotherapy as an essential part of the educational and therapeutic facilities available to pupils.
The new pool building had to replicate the existing school, to which it is linked, in terms of style, height, roof pitch, materials, etc. The building is constructed in timber frame with glulam laminated beams and trusses, and is faced externally in red brick; the 30 degree roof has a natural slate finish. The pool itself measures 12m x 6m, and has a hoist, sensory bubble pool, viewing area and changing facilities suitable for all.
A soft play room, stores and plant room complete the ground floor. A first floor overlooking the pool hall provides a meeting/conference room.
The pool operates at 33 degrees C, the very warm water being essential for hydrotherapy treatment. The bacteria levels in the pool are controlled by an ultra-violet treatment system and climate control equipment maintains a constant air temperature of 34 degrees C.
